What is hemp?
Hemp is historically one of the most helpful and used plants on Earth. Humans have employed various parts of the hemp plant for eons for food, textiles, paper, fabric, and currently for bioplastics and fuel oil (which could help eliminate fossil fuels and ozone depletion).
Like a weed, hemp grows quickly in most environments and has developed strong natural defenses to deal with pests. Hemp is a bio-accumulator so it picks up toxins from soil like a sponge. This is why we maintain utmost integrity with our agricultural practices so there are no residual toxins. Hemp is amazingly also a bio-remediator, meaning hemp improves the quality of the soil where it grows. The hemp plant itself is a renewable resource that can be domestically made.
Hemp is a plant in the Cannabis Sativa family. This family contains numerous varieties, the most famous of which is known for psychoactive properties (often called cannabis, marijuana, or “weed”). What distinguishes hemp as different within this family (according to the United States Farm Bill of 2018) is that hemp plants produce less than 0.3 percent Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main compound in cannabis that makes users feel high. Hemp is the industrial variant of cannabis which is cultivated for its fiber, stalk, and seeds, as well as the other natural healing compounds like CBD (Cannabidiol).
What is CBD?
All plants produce essential oils (potent phytochemicals and aromatic compounds found in plant resins) which act as external immune and communication systems for the plant.
CBD Oil is the essential oil of hemp. Also referred to as hemp oil, this potent form of cannabis essential oil is rich in the natural compound, Cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is non-intoxicating.
What is the Endo-Cannabinoid System?
As medical cannabis legalized in CA in the 1990s and international research advanced, scientists discovered that all humans have an Endocannabinoid System (ECS) which helps to maintain balance in the mind and body.
The ECS is a neurotransmitter system of receptors in the body that interact with chemicals (called endocannabinoids) from the brain to trigger various functional responses in the body. The ECS is one of the largest cell signaling systems in the body.
CB1 and CB2 receptors in the ECS system (found in the brain, organs, glands, muscles, connective tissues, and immune cells) regulate various functions like appetite, pain-sensation, restored sleep cycles, improved mood, memory, stress response, immune function, temperature, libido and more.
External phyto-cannabinoids (plant-based chemical compounds found in cannabis) connect with cannabinoid receptors in the body and can help the ECS maintain homeostasis when out of balance.
How do I use Family Tree CBD?
We encourage you to explore various methods of ingestion for efficacy. Many consumers find a combination of methods work well.
Some common ways to take CBD include:
ONSET: 5-15 mins
DURATION: Up to 6 hours
Smoking, Dabbing, Vaping: This option can provide you the greatest bioavailability and fastest relief although the effects may be shorter lasting than other ingestion methods.
ONSET: 10 mins
DURATION: 6-8 hours
Sublingually means taking underneath the tongue. This method sends CBD oil into the bloodstream through cannabinoid receptors on the salivary glands. This method of ingested is understood to be highly effective. Any cannabis product that is absorbed through the membranes of the mouth, like a dropper of oil or candy that is sucked, is called a sublingual product. This ingestion method leads to a faster efficacy than processing CBD through the digestive system.
3. Topical CBD:
ONSET: 5-20 mins
DURATION: 90-180 mins
CBD topicals work best for surface-level relief of localized aches and pains. Topical cannabinoid products are helpful for the properties of the compounds that help with inflammation, fighting pain, and as antioxidants at or near the sight of application. Cannabinoids can’t penetrate deeply enough through the skin to be efficiently absorbed into the bloodstream therefore making them safe for use by all.
ONSET: 60-120 mins
DURATION: 8-10 hours
Through infused edibles and beverages or capsules, CBD can be taken orally. This method requires the digestive tract to help metabolize and absorb the CBD to make it available.
A fat-soluble carrier oil (like organic MCT oil which we use for it’s beneficial properties), makes the cannabis more bio-available when ingested. The ingestible must be decarboxylated at low temperature to activate the compounds inside, like CBD, so the product is effective.
Although it can take longer to notice the effects of CBD through this delivery method the results may be longer lasting than other methods.
What is the Entourage Effect?
Scientists have coined the synergistic action of the many compounds present in the Cannabis plant as the Entourage Effect. The Entourage Effect highlights the medicinal efficacy of a whole plant as greater than the sum of its parts.
This is why we offer solventless, completely Full Spectrum CBD at Family Tree that includes the entire range of cannabinoids and terpenes in the plant.
When researchers study CBD (a compound found in the Cannabis plant called Cannabidiol), it’s analyzed mostly as a single molecule, extracted in biochemical labs. This research does not include study of whole plant extractions, which contain more than 400 trace compounds including CBD and THC. There are huge variations among strains based on the terpenes (aromatic qualities), flavonoids (flavor qualities), and cannabinoids contained within the plant.
Dr. John McPartland, a leading expert in cannabinoid research and alternative medicine from the University of Vermont, is quoted by Project CBD as saying, “Cannabis is inherently polypharmaceutical and synergy arises from interactions between its multiple components.”
How much CBD do I take?
We recommend that you speak with your physician to find the right dose of CBD for you. Although your provider may not be an expert in CBD, your doctor can tell you if hemp is a good choice for you or not based on your health history and medications.
Our products have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Our products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. All of our products contain less than .3% delta-nine THC.
The USDA has not approved CBD for use yet and therefore does not offer dosing recommendations. Any supplement or medication carries a potential risk of reaction; we recommend you try a small dose first to observe your reaction.
Everyone is different with unique needs. There is not a set dose of CBD for everybody and how much CBD is available in the bloodstream varies by ingestion method.
We encourage you to explore various strains and ingestion methods in the right setting for you.
A common dose of CBD is 15 – 30 mg per dose. Many people use less or more than this. Factors like weight, pain level, quality of product and ingestion method all determine the efficacy. General industry standards suggest you try:
Low Strength: (0.1 mg/lb) 1 mg every 10 lbs
Medium Strength: (0.3 mg/lb) 3 mg every 10 lbs
High Strength: (0.6 mg/lb) 6 mg every 10 lbs
To find what’s best for you, we recommend you start with half your desired dosage and wait 2-3 hours to notice results. Follow all instructions on the packaging. Consistent use leads to more bioavailable CBD in the body.
What is your extraction process?
We use mechanical extraction to make organic CBD hash, dry sift (kief), bubble hash, and rosin.
Our extraction processes are solventless and create full spectrum concentrate- meaning terpenes and cannabinoids are preserved rather than isolated or degraded. A full-spectrum extract captures a majority of the therapeutic compounds contained in the cannabis plant from the time it was processed, eliminating lipids and fats that lack any medicinal benefits.
We use an entirely chemical free process to make certified organic, pure and potent CBD rosin oil. We used gentle heat and pressure applied to the hemp plant (buds, hash, and kief) to create a pure and potent concentrate that doesn’t require the use of external solvents. We carefully formulate a house blend for a highly concentrated product full of cannabinoids with a heavy terpene profile, which is the basis of our product line.
ICE WATER HASH
Also known as Bubble or Water Hash separates countless trichomes, or resinous glands from the plant using ice water, agitation, and micro screens. Ice water separation is a clean method to remove large amounts of resin from raw plant material without chemicals.
DRY SIFT (KIEF)
We collect CBD trichomes (resin glands), by sifting them through a mesh screen and continue to finer screen them. The trichomes collected are called Kief. The potency is high. We use Kief in our house rosin, food infusions, and to add to our smokable hemp options.
When is CBD Active?
In order for the body to fully benefit from CBD, the compound must be heated (decarboxylation is the chemical reaction of removing a carboxyl group) to activate the CBD. When cured, raw CBD plant matter slightly decarboxylates naturally on it’s own although to fully complete this process could take years during which time the material is degrading. Heat causes the acid in the cannabinoids (the “a” in CBDa), to release a carbon dioxide molecule, changing its chemical formula from CBDa to CBD. This way CBD is bioavailable. Many companies selling CBD to not take the time or care to decarb properly, leaving the CBD useless to the user.
Will I get high from CBD or CBG?
Many people are familiar with cannabis famously bred for potent THC oil, as this one specific cannabinoid, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), creates a psychoactive high.
Hemp contains less than .3% delta nine THC. The minor cannabinoids CBG and CBD are prominent in hemp. They do not get you high. These are non mind-altering compounds.
Is CBD Legal?
You can legally purchase hemp in all fifty United States. Family Tree products are fully tested and verified by third party analytical labs, and contain no more than 0.3% of THC (the legal limit for THC in CBD as outlined by the 2018 Farm Bill).
Does smoking hemp have any benefits?
If you’re trying to quit smoking cigarettes, research published in the journal of Psychopharmacology shows reduced withdrawal symptoms from rats addicted to nicotine with the support of CBD- making it easier for them to give up nicotine.
Smoking hemp helps with immediate activation of CBD. Although there’s no “high,” like other forms of cannabis, smoking hemp can one to quickly feel the benefits of CBD.
The following story published by VPR about smoking CBD, written by Emily Corwin, caught our eyes and ears.
Listen to the Full Story here | Excerpt Below:
“When Congress legalized hemp farming at the end of last year, CNN’s Harmeet Kaur wrote: “… if you try to smoke hemp, you’ll probably just end up with a headache.”
Kaur may not be spending enough time in Vermont.
Advocates have been at pains to differentiate marijuana, the psychoactive cannabis flower people smoke, from hemp, marijuana’s non-psychoactive relative. But increasingly, Vermonters are smoking hemp buds in the same way Americans have smoked marijuana buds for a hundred years.
“Oh my gosh, they did not do good research,” Kelsy Raap said when I told her about the CNN story.
Raap and her family own Green State Gardner, a cannabis garden store and CBD retailer. There, employees carefully cultivate hemp flower specifically for smoking. That old headache myth? Raap said that’s a relic from the days when hemp plants were only cultivated to make fibers for textiles.”
